BMI Calculator

Calculate your Body Mass Index in metric or imperial. Includes WHO weight categories and your healthy weight range.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from your weight and height. It is a widely used screening tool to identify whether a person is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.

BMI Categories (WHO Standard)

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 — Healthy weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30.0 and above — Obese

Important: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It doesn't measure body fat directly and may be inaccurate for athletes, elderly people or those with high muscle mass. Always consult a healthcare professional for a full assessment.

How BMI is calculated

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. For example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = BMI of 22.9.

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so a fit athlete may show as overweight. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored on your body, which affects health risk. Waist circumference is often used alongside BMI for a more complete picture.
